1926.
It was on October 3 that a first
provisional Minor Seminary started at
Peramiho in conjunction with the Central
School (the new type of “Higher
Education” at the same time introduced
by the Government). Father Severin
Hofbauer was the intrepid promoter of
this training for priesthood until his
death in 1955.
1933.
On July l6, the first students began
Major Seminary studies, listening to the
teaching of philosophy by Father
Eberhard Spiess. Three years later he
was seconded by Father John Baptist
Wolf, lecturer in Theology.
1940.
On June 27, the present main building of
Peramiho Major Seminary was opened. The
major seminarians, who since 1936 had
studied at Kigonsera, came here and left
their quarters at Kigonsera to the minor
seminarians who separated themselves
fully from the Central School at
Peramiho.
1943.
On July 28, the Christian community of
Peramiho celebrated the ordination of
its first two priests, Gervas Ntara and
Simon Kapinga. By 2006 the total number
of priests who had studied in this
Seminary had risen to 536. Out of this
number thirteen are bishops and three
abbots.
1968.
On April l6, Peramiho Seminary received
an inter-diocesan status, as by then the
number of dioceses entrusting it with
the training of their seminarians had
increased to five, namely Peramiho (Songea),
Ndanda (Mtwara), Iringa, Nachingwea and
Njombe. So the Seminary was placed
under the joint directorship of the five
Bishops concerned. At the same time,
Father J.B. Wolf, the Rector since 1940,
retired, and at his place a son of the
country, Fr. Stephen Mbunga, was
appointed Rector.
1969.
On
May 20, the diocese of Peramiho became
Songea diocese. This then was divided
into three dioceses, namely Songea
itself, Njombe (1968) and Diocese of
Mbinga (1986).
1973.
On
March 19, the then diocese of Ndanda
became Mtwara diocese. This was then
divided into two, namely, Mtwara and
Lindi dioceses in l986.
1986.
On October 17, the former diocese of
Nachingwea became the diocese of
TUNDURU-Masasi.
1987.
On November 23, the diocese of Songea
became the Archdiocese of Songea,
comprising dioceses of Songea itself,
Iringa, Njombe, Mtwara, Mbinga, Lindi,
Mbeya and TUNDURU-Masasi. So the
Seminary was placed under the joint
leadership of eight Bishops concerned.
There were changes, too, in Rectors of
the seminary. The vacancy left by Rev.
Fr. Stepehen Mbunga (1968 –1972) was
filled by H.E. Magnus Mwalunyungu (1972
– 1975), then H.E. Emmanuel Mapunda
(1976 –1980), H.E. Tarcisius
Ngalalekumtwa (1981 – 1982), H.G.
Norbert Mtega (1982 –1985), Rev. Fr.
Sebastian Napachihi (1986 – 1989 R.I.P),
Rev. Fr. Serapius Komba ( 1989 –1992
R.I.P.), Rev. Fr. Justin Sapula (1992 –
1994), Rev. Fr. Eberhard Mwageni (1994
–2000) and Rev. Fr. Titus Amigu (2000 -
). |
